Santa Fu!

"An excellent Christmas classic!"

submission: Santa Fu!
date: December 23, 2009

I loved this game so much that I absolutely had to review it! Mix the classic, 8-bit gaming style with some kung-fu style action and a pissed-off, drunken Santa? Instant win!

The best thing about this game has to be its simplicity. Simple, quick-to-learn controls and a good, solid gameplay give more to that retro feel and bring back memories blowing cartridges on the old NES. Also, as an added treat, adding the Gyromite music was a definite plus. Lastly, the gameplay was hard enough to keep people engrossed and not feel like you're just mashing buttons, especially past level 1.

This was a great submission, one that I'd say tops the Christmas '09 charts. Thanks so much for the great game! I really enjoyed it!

"Great Stick Flash"

date: December 17, 2009

I have to say, while I've seen dozens of these stick flash, few stick out as being really good. This shows a lot of potential. I like how you set up the characters in the description and give them personality, and how smooth the flash was.

There are only two real suggestions I have to offer:
1) Don't end the flash so abruptly. Give the viewer a split second to know the final blow is coming...it'll give it all the more effect.

2) Make a series of these. Create different characters with different personalities/strengths, and go to town. Who knows, how about a huge tournament? This could realy go somewhere.

Thanks for the great submission, and best of luck!

Author's Response:

1. Yeah, that's a great suggestion! People on FluidAnims just told me to practice, but it's nice to get some quantitative advice to build on!

2. These are RHG battles, meaning I'll be facing off several enemies, but Steven Walking will always be in MY RHG battles. However, I do have another character ready in case I decide to ditch Steven.

Did He Die?

"<3 Jimmy Chiu"

submission: Did He Die?
date: November 24, 2009

Glad to see you back in action, SIGNE! Jimmy Chiu is always a favorite of mine, and I love to see him back on Newgrounds for your latest submission! Here's some quick comments:

- The Flash itself was relatively simple, but it wasn't meant to be anything more than a simple 5-question quiz. The quiz by itself would be quite bland, but when you lay Jimmy Chiu on top of it with his wry humor, it makes for a great Flash.

- The animation, as usual, is excellent. Your graphics skills in Flash are outstanding, and the effort you put into it is shown.

- The "Did He Die" segment is not a bad idea. If you were wondering if it would be offensive or anything, I'd say not. You're not insulting any of the actors (at least the ones that passed), and any jokes you make about them (like Bill Cosby in Ghost Dad) are in good taste. So, I'd say go for it.

Thanks again for the great submit, and I hope to see more of Jimmy Chiu in the future!

MK Mishaps Gold

"Hilarious"

submission: MK Mishaps Gold
date: September 17, 2009

I must admit that after a while these flashes seem to get pretty overdone, but you managed to make this one awesome! Your humor was definitely up to par, and the quality of the flash was good quality. Overall, you did a great job! I was seriously compelled to watch it to the ending, as I didn't want to miss a great joke!

Graphics - While it is a sprite flash, the sprites were done very well, and the presentation was perfect. You could easily mistake a lot of these clips for in-game videos. Hell, you even did a good job integrating the superhero characters into the Mortal Kombat world without it seeming out of place! Overall, excellent quality.

Humor - Awesome! I was definitely lol-ing through a good amount of these, especially your Christian Bale rant joke. Batman walking away looking all pissed off as he says "You and me we're done professionally" was PERFECT. Top notch. Hell, that one clip alone could've gotten a good score! But of course, the rest of the jokes were excellent as well, so it was nicely balanced.

Overall - As you can see, I enjoyed the flash quite a bit. I gave it an 8/10, as it wasn't perfect, but was definitely better than most. As you seem to do this quite often, I don't need to give you ideas or advice, so I'll just congratulate you on a job well done and hope to see more of your work in the future!

MEGA CAR!

"Solid 8-bit game"

submission: MEGA CAR!
date: September 12, 2009

This game was quite a bit of fun, I must admit! I found myself playing it more than sanity would probably depict after a period of time. Therefore, I'm strongly compelled to review it.

Graphics - In a word, awesome. Simplicity at its finest. After all, 8-bit cars flying around shooting space invaders while pooping rainbows...you can't get simpler than that. :-) Seriously, though, the 8-bit genre can get old, but not when properly done like you guys have

Animation - The framerate wasn't as smooth as I'd like it to be, but it seems to add to the gameplay. We didn't exactly have 60fps games back in 8-bit time. So, dead on there as well.

Music - To be honest, the music just plain simply made the flash. Without 8-bit Weezer kicking the drumbeats while your car beats up space invaders, the gamewould be a lackluster version of itself. Fits the genre perfectly, fits the game perfectly. Perfect pick.

Gameplay - Gameplay itself is simple and uncluttered, with the simplest of all mechanics. Hold down the space bar and scroll up and down to beat up people. Fits well for the genre, and for the game as a whole. I love it. It's addicting.

Programming - Well, here's where the game falls a little lackluster. The lack of scoring is a bit disappointing, as this would be the perfect game for jockeying for high-scores between your friends (like the penguin and helicopter games). Also, the lack of a replay button is a bit annoying, but a minor issue at worst. I have to say, though, your text going in place of the replay/high score gives a good laugh and almost makes up for the lack of an actual high score and replay button... :-)

Overall - Overall, the game gets a 7/10, not to imply it's inferior, but it really just feels incomplete. As you can see, I've favorited the game, so I'm all for it, and I'd love to see those few little punctuations get added. Other things I can suggest would be power-ups, health regens, screen bombs, and maybe a high-score system. A bit of work and an updated submission could easily project your flash into blue-score and award territory. And I'm sure you and your fans will be flying as high as your mega car... :-) Thanks for the great submit! I'm looking forward to seeing more from you guys!

Author's Response:

Thanks for this awesome review. Well honestly the reason why we didn't made a replay button/ highscore, because there where some difficulties and we didn't want to put too much effort in this game/ we wanted to submit it really quick :). I know it's a pretty bad way of working, but hey :) a 7/10 isn't too bad is it.

Also, be sure to look out for or next game ;)

Funny Socks

"Fun game!"

submission: Funny Socks
date: September 11, 2009

I had to write a quick review about this one, because I couldn't stop playing the game till I finished all 5 levels!

As other reviews already stated, this is a game style that isn't exactly fresh and original, but I think the game was very well done and deserves some credit for its excellent execution.

Graphics - VERY polished. Looks professional. The setting for the game is very nicely done, and everything you see is of excellent quality. Not much advice I can give here.

Animation - Doesn't really apply too much to this game, but the framerate was high and everything felt smooth. Well done.

Sound - Sound effects were good quality and are up to par with the flash, and the music was nice. Granted, the music does get old and repetitive after a while, but you've handily placed a mute button separately for both sound effects and music, which make up for it.

Gameplay - Like I said before, it's a simple concept that has been done before, but this rendition of it was very well done. The controls were intuitive and felt natural. A good game for just "jumping in" to play.

Replayability - The one thing this game lacks is the ultimately the replayability. While the scoreboard and the urge to beat your best time are good catalysts for playing again, it's not the kind of game to urge people to play incessantly. Having only five levels also makes the single run a bit short, which will mean most people will beat the game in one sitting. (That's probably for the best though, because anyone that has more than 100 pairs of socks laying around that need to be sorted need some kind of mental help...)

Overall - I gave you an 8/10 for an overall excellent game. Flash like this prove what good, decent scripting, graphics, and gameplay can do to take a simple concept to the next level. You've made for yourself a nice casual game perfect for someone bored on their lunch hour. Excellent work! I hope to see more flash from you soon, as you seem to have quite the knack for it!

|Red Ball|

"Nicely done"

submission: |Red Ball|
date: September 10, 2009

Despite this flash being relatively simple, it is quite pleasing to the eye and is just enjoyable. All aspects of the flash come together to take an otherwise bland concept to a very enjoyable movie!

Graphics - The graphics, in ways, were kinda simple and basic, but in other ways, the graphics truly were a pleasure. The use of gradients certainly helped the look along in a big way, giving it a nice polished look. If I had to make some suggestions, I'd try working on honing in the details of different items, such as the grass platforms. Otherwise, a lot of good concepts were there, and gave the flash a nice above-average look.

Animations - In a word, awesome. The animations were very smooth, and a nice framerate was chosen. Your use of blurs and camera action really make the flash and give it a very smooth look. Keep it up!

Music - The musical accompaniment was perfect. Not only was Africa a good choice in general, but Andy McKee's instrumental version was the perfect low-profile choice. Also, I noticed how you integrated the music with the animation, which made it all the better.

Overall, I gave your flash a 9/10 just because it came together so seamlessly for an otherwise simple subject. I really enjoyed the flash, and thank you for submitting it!

Super Bean: Takes Flight

"Not a bad submission"

date: September 9, 2009

Not too bad of a minigame! It certainly shows potential for either a nice revision, or for games to come! Here's some in-depth comments about the game:

Graphics - The graphics were indeed nice. While the graphics were relatively simple overall, it shows attention to detail and is definitely a cut above your average flash. The only thing that tweaked me a bit was the red hitbox showing up in the flash, which was mildly distracting, but should be a very easy fix.

Animation - Nice and smooth. High framerates and the good graphics combined give the game a nice, professional look.

Gameplay - The gamepley itself was simple, but good. There was one large flaw in the gameplay, however, which is that you can simply move the bean outside of the screen and win without trying. A simple collision detection for outside the window should fix that easily. Besides that, the only thing I can think of is having the game last longer and either be level-based or score-based. Relatively simple changes like this can open up the game big time.

Overally, my review is 5/10 as it is a great base for a game, despite its simplicity. A few bugfixes and a couple of minor embellishments can turn this game into a genuine timewaster. My best advice, however, is to keep up working with flash, as you appear to have potential for some great submissions in the future!

Thanks for the submit, and good luck with your flash in the future!

Thanks for for the review, it was very helpfull. I fixed the red hitbox. It was just a dumb oversight, I forgot to get rid of it before i published the flash.

L337 Kr3w: Reanimation

"Amazing"

date: May 19, 2008

I was quite impressed by your first flash! At first, I thought the flash looked like it was going to be good, but was surprisingly presented with a legend! I have a feeling that if you keep this kind of stuff up, you'll be gracing front-page Newgrounds on a regular basis!

Your animation style is definitely your strongest point. While the characters were quite simple (and they were even crude at some points), the way you animated them was absolutely flawless and looked absolutely great. In fact, I feel the simple graphics gave it a charm that was refreshing and really made you pay attention to the flash more than just go, "Ooh, pretty flash effects!"

The actual premise of the flash was another slam-dunk. At first, I wasn't sure what I was getting into (the Street Fighter II select screen coupled with Super Smash Bros. music was deceiving). When I actually clicked on a selection, I thought maybe the video that was playing was a lead-in video to the actual game. Turns out your animations were quite interesting (and hilarious), and I think I prefer this over a game.

If I had to give recommendations for next time, I would definitely say to keep with this style of flash. The "battle royale" or "brawl-style" fighting flash seems very natural for you, and was definitely excellent to watch. I would love to see more flash like this, maybe a Newgrounds Battle Royale or something. I'm sure there's plenty of random beat-people-up flash you could make, even something like a "Choose-your-own-adventure" style game where you choose what happens when, and determine who wins a big brawl. Who knows?

Either way, I'm glad you made this flash, and was happy to vote/review it. I'll be watching this again soon and showing my friends. Here's a congrats to you for a great job, and hoping to see more flash in the future!

Zen Plants

"Potential, but doesn't work"

submission: Zen Plants
date: May 12, 2008

I tried the game, and it looks beautiful. I personally would love to have played this game through and given it a great score, maybe even favorited it. However, it looks like the game does not work.

I tried to play level 1 of the plant game, and tried to find the right conditions for the game. I ended up trying 111, 222, 333, and 444 to see if I could find any of the conditions. However, I could get any conditions matched no matter what I did. I even tried the game in two web browsers (Internet Explorer and Firefox) to no avail.

It looks like it could be an actionscript issue with the game that can be easily patched up. Once it is, you can try resubmitting it, when I would be more than willing to give you a great score!

Good luck!
